Good campsites are available at thunder and fourth of july camp but camping is also possible high on the ridge of ruby mountain.

This site has information for over a dozen hikes in the ruby mountains. These mountains contain spectacular scenery and a variety of recreational activities. The district covers about approximately 450 000 acres with elevations ranging from 6 000 feet to 11 387 feet at ruby dome. The ruby mountain trail is located in the ross lake national recreation area which means that it is one of the few trails in this area of the north cascades that can be hiked with a dog.

While i would hardly characterize my experience in the rubies via lamoille canyon as uncrowded campground and trailhead parking lot was packed trails very busy the scenery was nearly equal to many national parks yet without the congestion and hubub that so many of them have the hiking here is excellent and i hope to return someday for some overnight backpacking.
